Running payroll for a team across the UK, Ireland and Kosovo

Small companies are more international than the software built for them. A designer in Pristina, a developer in Manchester and an account manager in Dublin are one team — and three payroll rulebooks.

What differs

• United Kingdom: PAYE income tax with a personal allowance and progressive bands, National Insurance for the employee, and auto-enrolment pension contributions (typically 5% employee).
• Ireland: PAYE with tax credits rather than an allowance, the Universal Social Charge (USC) in its own bands, and PRSI.
• Kosovo: Progressive monthly income-tax bands and a mandatory 5% contribution to the Kosovo Pension Savings Trust, paid in euros.

The mistake we see most

Adding it all up in one currency. A "total payroll" of £84,000 that silently includes €9,500 converted at whatever rate the spreadsheet had that day is not a number anyone should sign off. Report per currency, always.
